The Family of Cyrus “Malvern” LAWRENCE

 

            The third Cyrus was born in St John in Bedwardine, Worcester and christened on 2nd February 1827.

 

            For the Censuses of 1841, 1851 and 1861 he lived with his parents in St Johns. In 1871 the Census shows him living in Belmont Road, Malvern Link, Worcestershire, a few doors from the Cross Keys. In 1881 he is in Cowleigh Road, North Malvern and in 1891 at Spring Cottage, Cowleigh Road. In 1901 he lived at 3 Park Hill Villas, West Malvern Road, North Malvern.

 

            On 21st August 1862 he married Juliana CULLIS from Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. One of the witnesses was William, the husband of Cyrus’s cousin Emma. Juliana was daughter of George CULLIS and his wife Anne. George was a Surgeon Dentist, originally from Pembrokeshire.

 

            Juliana died on 20th January 1907 at their home in North Malvern. Cyrus died on 26th January 1911 in the Workhouse Infirmary, Upton upon Severn, Worcestershire.

 

            Cyrus and Juliana had five children – Augustus Cyrus, Juliana Edith, Frank Sidney, Edith/Ada Mary and Catherine Gertrude.

 

            1] Augustus was born in Dudley on 22nd August 1863. The Censuses of 1871 and 1881 show him living with his parents. In 1891 he was lodging with William and Emma BENDALL at 4 Denmark Street, Aston Manor, Warwickshire. Emma could be his mother’s sister. On 13th November 1897 he married Louise LEECH from Aston, Birmingham. The Census of 1901 shows them living at 147 Victoria Street, Dunstable, Bedfordshire, with three children: Winifred Kate, Frank Cyrus and Archibald Gurney.

 

            2] Juliana was born in Leigh¹, Worcestershire on 14th August 1865. She was at home for the Census of 1871 and 1881. In 1891 she appears to be staying with her aunt, Helena BACON, in Shelfield, Walsall Wood, Staffordshire. She returned to Cowleigh, Malvern, where she was married to George WATSON on 19th December 1891. In 1901 they were living in Thornthwaite, nr Keswick, Cumberland. They had two children George and Ethel.

 

            3] Frank Sidney, sometimes known as Sidney Frank, was my great grandfather.

 

            4] Edith, as she is shown on the FamilySearchä website, was Christened on 4th August 1870 at Malvern Link, Worcestershire. On the Censuses for 1871, 1881 and 1891 she is listed as Ada, living with her parents.


            5] Catherine was born in North Malvern² on 25th May 1875. She was living with her parents for the Census of 1881. She married Henry Gulliver JONES on 30th July 1898. They lived with her parents and their daughter Violet in 1901. She was known affectionately as ‘Great Aunt Kate’. When I was very young, I did meet her, at her house in North Malvern.

² In 1875 North Malvern came under Cradley, then in Herefordshire.
