George Henry CULLIS was born about 1809 in Haverford West, Pembrokeshire.
He married Anna AMBURY on 12th May 1829, at Peterstow Herefordshire.
He died in 1894 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.
They had six daughters and one son.
1] Georgiana born 1831 in Peterstow.
2] Elizabeth born 1833 in Bristol.
3] Juliana born 1834 in Sellack, Herefordshire. She married Cyrus “Malvern” LAWRENCE on 21st August 1862 in Cheltenham
4] Mary born in 1837, also in Sellack.
5] Emma born 1840 in Cheltenham.
6] Catherine born 1842 in Cheltenham.
7] Augustus born 1844 in Cheltenham.
George was a ‘Surgeon Dentist’ and practiced for many years in Cheltenham. According to business directories in Cheltenham Library he lived at various premises in the town. 1840, 14 Clarence Street: 1841, 5 Regent Street: 1847, 2 Portland Street: 1850, 33 Cambray Place: 1858, 4 Cambray Place.
At the time of the 1861 Census he was still at 4 Cambray Place. In 1871 and 1881 he was at 3 Pittville Terrace. In 1881 he had moved to Exmouth Cottage, Hewlett Street.
5 Regent Street is now a delicatessen specialising in cheeses, 2 Portland Street is the Masonic Lodge, 33 Cambray Place is a ladies clothes shop and 4 Cambray Place is now a pub/restaurant called Taylor’s. While at 3 Pittville Terrace a young boy was born next door at No 4. His name - Gustav Holst, who grew up to be the acclaimed composer.
Also listed on the Censuses from 1851 to 1891 was Anna’s niece Anna DEW, daughter of Alice AMBURY and Thomas DEW.
Through Anna AMBURY’S family tree I have traced her father’s family back to 1656 in English Bicknor, Herefordshire and her mother’s back to 1694 in Newent, Gloucestershire.
